BOEING ELEVATES SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS WITH BLENDED SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL PURCHASE

Boeing is taking significant strides towards reducing its carbon footprint with its largest-ever purchase of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). With a commitment to environmental stewardship, the company is procuring 9.4 million gallons (35.6 million litres) of SAF to power its 2024 U.S. commercial operations. This purchase marks a substantial increase of over 60% compared to its procurement in 2023, highlighting Boeing’s dedication to sustainability and carbon emissions reduction.

The blended SAF, comprising 30% derived from waste by-products like fats, oils, and greases, and 70% conventional jet fuel, will play a crucial role in supporting Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator program and its commercial flights in the United States. Ryan Faucett, Vice President of Environmental Sustainability at Boeing, emphasises the company’s unwavering commitment to safety, quality, and sustainability, asserting that sustainable aviation fuel is pivotal in decarbonising the aviation industry. Approximately 20% of Boeing’s fuel usage consists of SAF blends, with ongoing efforts to increase its utilisation to foster growth within the SAF sector.

Unblended SAF has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 85% over its life cycle, presenting a significant opportunity for the commercial aviation industry to mitigate its climate impact over the next three decades. To facilitate this transition, Boeing will receive 4 million gallons of blended SAF into its fuel farms in the Pacific Northwest. EPIC Fuels, a subsidiary of Signature Aviation, will supply 2.5 million gallons sourced from Neste, while Avfuel will contribute 1.5 million gallons of blended SAF from the same supplier.

In addition to the physical procurement of SAF, Boeing is also investing in CO2 emissions reduction associated with 5.4 million gallons of blended SAF through a process known as book-and-claim. This involves purchasing SAF certificates to offset conventional jet fuel consumption. EPIC Fuels will supply 3.5 million gallons of blended SAF from Neste through this method, while World Fuel Services, a subsidiary of World Kinect, will provide 1.9 million gallons sourced from World Energy.

Boeing’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its operations; it underscores the company’s broader mission to drive economic opportunity, promote sustainability, and positively impact communities worldwide. With a diverse and dedicated team, Boeing is at the forefront of innovation, guided by core values of safety, quality, and integrity.
