In a historic stride, FS, a powerhouse in Brazil’s ethanol and animal nutrition sector, secures the coveted ISCC international certification, signaling compliance with stringent global requirements for ethanol and corn oil production. This groundbreaking achievement positions FS as the world’s pioneering ethanol producer to obtain the Low LUC Risk certification, achieved in collaboration with second-crop corn supplier, GGF Group.
FS’ CEO, Rafael Abud, emphasizes the significance of this milestone, stating, “This certification validates Brazilian second-crop corn ethanol as a low-carbon feedstock for challenging sectors like aviation. Our ethanol is now a competitive and highly scalable source for global aviation fuel needs.”
Low LUC Risk: Zero iLUC signifies a biofuel, such as SAF, produced without generating greenhouse gas emissions related to Indirect Land Use Change (iLUC). This approach ensures that biofuel production contributes positively to carbon emissions reduction without causing additional environmental harm.
ISCC CORSIA Certification: The ISCC is a global sustainability certification system, covering various sustainable feedstocks for different markets. ISCC CORSIA, a voluntary scheme aligned with ICAO standards, evaluates environmental, social, and traceability criteria for sustainable aviation fuel production.
Certification Process: FS’s comprehensive certification process spans from agricultural inputs to SAF production, incorporating Água Santa farm, a GGF Group supplier, in verifying the zero Indirect Land Use Change of second-crop corn. This pioneering achievement marks the first Low LUC risk certification record globally.
Daniel Lopes, FS Vice President of Sustainability and New Business, stresses the complexity of the two-year implementation process, citing the need for extensive documentary evidence. He emphasises the challenge of scaling such certification to numerous producers, including small-scale ones, requiring flexibility and adjustment to rural realities.
Rogério Ferrarin, GGF’s Executive Director, adds, “This certification underscores our alignment with global agricultural practices and showcases how sustainability and traceability enhance second-crop corn productivity in the same agricultural area.”
