LOCKHEED MARTIN ADVANCES SECURE MILITARY COMMUNICATIONS WITH MUOS SATELLITE MILESTONE

Denver, February, 2025 – Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has achieved a major design milestone in its support of the U.S. Space Force (USSF) Space Systems Command’s upcoming Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) Service Life Extension (SLE) program. The successful completion of an Early Design Review (EDR) confirms the readiness of Lockheed Martin’s satellite design, ensuring continued secure, crystal-clear communications for military forces on the move.

Ensuring Reliable Military Connectivity

Lockheed Martin is one of two companies selected to develop next-generation MUOS satellite concepts under Phase 1 of the program, focusing on early design activities and risk reduction.

“In less than the initial one-year base period of performance, our team went above and beyond to deliver not only a successful early design review – but one so robust that it passed the rigorous standards of a more advanced design assessment,” said Maria Hartin-Swart, program management director for Lockheed Martin’s MUOS SLE development efforts.

Building on its extensive experience developing and sustaining the current MUOS constellation, Lockheed Martin aims to reduce mission risk while ensuring MUOS satellites remain operational and effective for years to come.

Innovative, Future-Proof Technology

For the MUOS satellite extension program, Lockheed Martin has partnered with SEAKR Engineering, a leader in advanced space electronics, to develop a state-of-the-art MUOS payload processor. This new processor is a critical component of the spacecraft, offering enhanced processing performance, resilience, and resource efficiency.

A key innovation of the next-generation MUOS payload processor is its ability to be reprogrammed in space, allowing future MUOS satellites to adapt and meet evolving mission needs. The processor recently completed a successful customer demonstration, earning a Technology Readiness Level-6 designation, indicating it is ready for production.

MUOS: Transforming Secure Communications for the Military

MUOS is a global satellite network that provides secure, beyond-line-of-sight Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) communications for military forces worldwide. The system features a unique Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) waveform, enabling it to function like a cellular network, efficiently managing multiple users across the spectrum.

Currently, MUOS satellites support over 67,000 terminals and radio users, offering:

  • Secure, high-bandwidth UHF communications
  • Simultaneous voice, video, and mission data transmission
  • Reliable connectivity in remote and contested environments

Following the conclusion of Phase 1, the U.S. Space Force will select a provider for Phase 2, which involves the production, testing, and delivery of two new MUOS satellites set for launch by 2030.
