WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Army has officially designated its Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) as the MV-75, marking a pivotal moment in the service’s aviation transformation efforts. The announcement was made during the Army Aviation Association of America’s annual Mission Solutions Summit, confirming that the MV-75, derived from Bell’s V-280 Valor tiltrotor, will replace a significant portion of the Black Hawk fleet and revolutionise tactical assault operations.
The designation “MV” reflects the aircraft’s multi-mission role and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capability. The number “75” is a symbolic homage to the year 1775, when the Continental Army was established – a fitting tribute as the Army embarks on a bold new aviation chapter.
Designed for the Future Battlespace
First approved under the prototype designation YMV-75A in late 2024, the MV-75 offers increased speed, range, and survivability – critical for future high-end conflicts, particularly in the Pacific theatre. It is being developed to replace the UH-60 Black Hawk and a portion of MH-60M aircraft used by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), with the design optimised for rapid special operations adaptation.
“We’re not waiting for a distant out-year to make this thing real,” said General James Mingus, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. “Under the Army Transformation Initiative, we are driving to get this aircraft online years ahead of schedule.”
Entry into Service Targeted for 2028
The Army is pushing for MV-75 initial fielding by 2028, ahead of the originally projected 2030 timeframe. The 101st Airborne Division, the Army’s elite air assault unit, is slated to be the first to receive the new aircraft and has already begun preparing infrastructure and operational doctrine for its arrival. Officials say the tiltrotor will significantly transform the division’s operational reach and tempo.
The Army also confirmed that specially configured variants for special operations are being developed in parallel, ensuring the MV-75’s utility across both conventional and elite aviation units.
A Modern Marvel for Multi-Domain Operations
Unlike previous utility (“U”) or cargo (“C”) designations, the “M” in MV-75 emphasises its role as a multi-domain enabler – capable of performing troop transport, casualty evacuation (CASEVAC), and high-speed insertion into contested environments. Its open architecture also supports modular upgrades and rapid adaptation for various mission profiles.
As Maj. Daniel Mathews, Public Affairs Advisor to the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, explained: “This is a vertical takeoff tiltrotor medium lift tactical assault and medical evacuation aircraft that will provide the Army with long-range, high-speed options that are survivable in contested environments.”
With development progressing at speed, the MV-75 is set to redefine U.S. Army aviation – combining the lift of a helicopter with the range and velocity of a fixed-wing aircraft, and bringing the future of tactical air mobility into sharp focus.
