Saint-Cloud, France – 28 April 2025 — A new chapter in Indo-French defence cooperation has begun with the signing of the Inter-Governmental Agreement for India’s acquisition of 26 Rafale Marine fighter aircraft, marking a significant step in strengthening the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities.
Signed in the presence of Dassault Aviation Chairman and CEO Éric Trappier, the agreement formalises the purchase announced in July 2023 following a competitive international evaluation. India now becomes the first export customer of the Rafale Marine, currently in service only with the French Navy.
This landmark deal underscores the depth of the strategic partnership between India and France, and the growing trust placed in the Rafale platform—already proven in Indian Air Force service with 36 aircraft currently operational. It also signals India’s commitment to equipping its naval aviation arm with the latest in carrier-based multirole technology.
“The Rafale Marine will offer the Indian Navy unmatched versatility and combat readiness, drawing upon the rich experience of the French Navy in operating the aircraft in complex maritime environments,” said Trappier. “On behalf of Dassault Aviation and our partners, I express deep gratitude to the Indian authorities for their trust over more than seven decades. We are proud to contribute to India’s sovereign capabilities and to support the country’s long-term strategic vision.”
The Rafale Marine acquisition also aligns with India’s broader defence modernisation and self-reliance initiatives, including ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’. Dassault’s continued investment and presence in India aims to foster local expertise, industrial partnerships, and long-term defence collaboration.
This new fleet of carrier-capable fighters is expected to significantly bolster India’s maritime strength, ensuring air superiority and rapid response from sea-based platforms, and further consolidating India’s position as a regional and global power.
