TEXTRON AVIATION MARKS MAJOR MILESTONE AS SECOND CJ4 GEN3 TEST AIRCRAFT TAKES FLIGHT

Textron Aviation continues to make significant strides in the development of its next-generation business jet, the Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen3, with the successful first flight of its second test aircraft, designated P1. This key milestone further strengthens the momentum of the CJ4 Gen3 flight test program, as the aircraft advances toward expected certification and entry into service in 2026.

The P1 aircraft took to the skies from Wichita, Kansas on May 15, piloted by James Bearman and Corey Eckhart. The flight lasted three hours and 29 minutes, during which the crew conducted a series of evaluations focused on avionics systems and general performance. The aircraft reached a cruising altitude of 45,000 feet and a top speed of 305 knots, performing smoothly and in line with program expectations.

“This achievement continues the forward momentum of the CJ4 Gen3 program and reflects the dedication and expertise of our team in designing, certifying and delivering the best aircraft for our customers,” said Chris Hearne, Senior Vice President, Engineering & Programs at Textron Aviation.

The P1 aircraft follows the CJ4 Gen3 prototype, which completed its maiden flight in 2024. With P1 dedicated to testing avionics, human factors, and cabin interiors, the program enters a more comprehensive phase of evaluation as Textron Aviation targets certification.

Announced during the 2024 NBAA-BACE event, the CJ4 Gen3 brings advanced features to the light jet market, most notably the new Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics suite. Designed to streamline cockpit flow and reduce pilot workload, the next-gen system offers enhanced responsiveness, intuitive touchscreen controls, and greater connectivity, including support for software-based updates. Garmin Autothrottles and the Garmin Emergency Autoland system further augment pilot confidence and operational safety.

As the largest Citation aircraft in the light jet category, the CJ4 Gen3 offers a compelling blend of speed, range, and mission flexibility. With a maximum range of 2,165 nautical miles, a cruise speed of 451 knots, and seating for up to 11 passengers, it serves a wide variety of applications — from business and corporate travel to specialised missions such as air ambulance, maritime patrol, and aerial survey.

Backed by the legacy of the world’s most popular business jet family, the CJ4 Gen3 represents Textron Aviation’s commitment to innovation and excellence, as it prepares to deliver the next generation of Citation performance to global operators.
