GOL AND TAP ADOPT IATA FUELIS TO DRIVE FUEL EFFICIENCY AND COST SAVINGS

New Delhi, June 2025 – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that GOL Linhas Aéreas and TAP Air Portugal are the first airlines to adopt IATA FuelIS, a sophisticated analytics solution designed to support long-term fuel optimisation and cost reduction strategies.

FuelIS is part of IATA’s broader roadmap to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, where operational efficiency improvements are expected to contribute about 10% of the total emissions reduction. The tool leverages the extensive data capabilities of IATA’s Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) platform, which incorporates input from the Flight Data eXchange (FDX) program—covering fuel data from over 220 airlines and 8 million flights annually.

“Fuel management is key for airlines,” said Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety and Security. “With jet fuel comprising 25–30% of operating costs, efficient usage is both a financial and environmental priority. FuelIS helps airlines benchmark their performance against peers, identifying actionable efficiencies that reduce costs and carbon emissions.”

TAP Air Portugal CEO Luís Rodrigues emphasised the dual benefits: “Fuel is a major cost driver for TAP. Managing consumption supports both cost control and decarbonisation. The insights FuelIS provides help us assess fleet modernisation and track our transition to SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).”

GOL COO Albert Pérez echoed the sentiment, stating: “Fuel is a significant cost factor, and managing it smartly can create a competitive edge. FuelIS equips us with the data to make better fuel decisions and benchmark our performance. This marks another step in our commitment to high-level operational efficiency.”

FuelIS integrates seamlessly with IATA’s Fuel Efficiency Gap Analysis (FEGA), supporting the development and evaluation of robust fuel strategies. Since 2005, IATA-led initiatives have helped airlines identify potential annual savings of 4.76 million tonnes in fuel, equating to $3.8 billion in reduced costs.

The adoption of FuelIS by TAP and GOL sets a strong precedent for data-driven efficiency in aviation, aligning cost management with sustainability goals.
