Archer Aviation marked a major milestone in the development of advanced air mobility with the successful first test flight of its Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft at Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi. The flight, which took place on July 2, 2025, represents a key step toward Archer’s commercial deployment strategy in the UAE and broader Middle East region.
The demonstration flight, supported by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC), was attended by senior leadership from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the Integrated Transport Centre, Abu Dhabi Aviation, Abu Dhabi Airports, and Archer’s regional partners. The test focused on evaluating the Midnight aircraft’s VTOL performance under the UAE’s demanding environmental conditions—high temperatures, humidity, and dust exposure.
“This flight marks a significant step towards realising Abu Dhabi’s ambition to lead the world in advanced urban air mobility,” said H.E. Badr Al-Olama, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office. “Through the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) Cluster, we are enabling companies like Archer to test, certify and scale next-generation air mobility solutions, reinforcing our position as a global launchpad for innovation.”
Archer’s CEO and Founder, Adam Goldstein, emphasised the importance of conducting test operations in real-world conditions: “Testing our aircraft in actual operating conditions in the middle of summer provides us with the data we need to progress our commercial and certification efforts both in the UAE and in the U.S.”
The test flight supports the rollout of Archer’s Launch Edition commercialisation programme with Abu Dhabi Aviation, which aims to establish air taxi services in the emirate. Abu Dhabi has already taken a leading role, approving the design for the UAE’s first hybrid heliport at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal and forming strategic partnerships to support next-generation transport initiatives.
Abu Dhabi’s role as Archer’s first Launch Edition market positions it at the forefront of global urban air mobility deployment. The emirate’s commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility is further cemented by its efforts to foster regulatory frameworks, infrastructure, and collaboration to accelerate the adoption of eVTOL technology.
With this successful flight, Archer is set to expand its test programme in the region, gathering further performance data and advancing its path toward certification and commercial service.
