Santa Cruz, CA – 6 August 2025 – Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE:JOBY), the pioneer in electric air taxi development, has announced a major milestone on its path to commercial operations. The company is preparing to begin final assembly of its first conforming aircraft, which will be used for Type Inspection Authorisation (TIA) flight testing with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
TIA testing represents a critical convergence of Joby’s design, testing, and manufacturing capabilities, all in alignment with FAA certification standards. It confirms that the aircraft’s design meets FAA requirements, that test plans have been approved, and that Joby has demonstrated the ability to manufacture a conforming version of its aircraft.
“Every component, every system, and every test we have completed over the past 15 years has led us to this point,” said Didier Papadopoulos, President of Aircraft OEM at Joby. “We are now bringing it all together on the first of several aircraft that will be used for the final phase of FAA flight testing.”
Joby expects its own test pilots to begin flying the conforming aircraft in 2025, followed shortly thereafter by FAA pilots, whose evaluations are crucial to achieving full FAA type certification. The aircraft entering final assembly has already undergone extensive testing, including:
- Static load testing on primary aerostructures, applying forces beyond those expected in actual flight, confirming structural integrity.
- Systems testing with advanced instrumentation and sensor calibration, setting the stage for precise performance validation under FAA supervision.
This progress marks the beginning of the fifth and final stage of FAA type certification and brings Joby closer to its goal of launching a commercial electric air taxi service.
Papadopoulos praised the Joby team’s dedication, noting:
“We said we’d deliver a conforming aircraft in 2025 and that’s exactly what we’re doing, all in alignment with FAA support. Meeting our TIA goals is a direct reflection of our team’s extraordinary dedication.”
Vertical Integration Driving Progress
Joby’s ability to design, build, and test its aircraft in-house through a vertically integrated approach has been instrumental in accelerating development while maintaining tight quality control. The company’s recent manufacturing expansion in California and Ohio, supported by its collaboration with Toyota, will allow Joby to scale up production to 24 aircraft per year.
Joby will release its Q2 2025 financial results after market close today, 6 August 2025, with a live webcast scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET, accessible via the Upcoming Events section at www.jobyaviation.com.
