LIFT CREW MEMBER REACHES NEW HEIGHTS WITH COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENCE

After years of dedication and sacrifice, Elizabeth Mapatle has achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a commercial pilot, joining the fewer than six percent of female commercial pilots worldwide, according to the Air Line Pilots Association International.

Elizabeth, who has worked as cabin crew for South African airline LIFT over the past five years and holds 15 years of industry experience, first discovered her love of aviation as a child when her father took her to the then Jan Smuts Airport to watch aircraft take off and land. That early inspiration set her on a path that culminated in earning her Private Pilot Licence in 2022, followed now by her Commercial Pilot Licence.

Speaking on her achievement, Elizabeth said: “It feels absolutely amazing! It’s a mix of pride, gratitude, and disbelief. It’s the kind of dream you work so hard for that when it finally happens, you need to pause and remind yourself – Wow, I really did it!”

Her journey has not been without challenges. Elizabeth balanced her studies with full-time work, often sacrificing personal comforts and making difficult financial decisions to cover the cost of flying. She also endured the devastating loss of both parents, just one month apart, during a critical stage of her training. She credits resilience, exercise, and taking life “one day at a time” with helping her through.

Elizabeth acknowledges the hurdles faced by women in aviation, often being questioned before given a chance to prove themselves. “It pushes you to work twice as hard – not only for yourself but to change perceptions,” she said. Her determination is aimed at inspiring the next generation of women to believe they belong in the cockpit.

Looking ahead, Elizabeth is preparing for her Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) exams, and is even considering pursuing a law degree. Her advice to aspiring female pilots is clear: “You’re going to hear more ‘no’s’ than ‘yes’s.’ But if you know your why, you stick to it, no matter how tough it gets. Keep your eyes on the goal and never, ever give up.”
