AFRICA’S LEADING AIRLINES JOIN FORCES TO STRENGTHEN MRO CAPABILITIES

Five of Africa’s largest carriers—Royal Air Maroc, Egyptair, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways—have announced a new collaborative initiative to enhance aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capacity across the continent.

The African Airlines Association (AFRAA), which confirmed the partnership, said the cooperation is aimed at cutting costs and boosting fleet efficiency for African operators.

Currently, limited MRO infrastructure compels many airlines to send aircraft abroad for heavy maintenance, a practice that increases expenses and complicates scheduling. AFRAA Secretary General Abderahmane Berthé emphasised that the alliance is intended to change this dynamic by developing stronger local capabilities and building a self-sufficient African maintenance sector.

Industry observers note that the agreement represents a significant step in advancing operational readiness and flight safety, while supporting broader economic integration within Africa’s aviation sector. By reducing dependency on external providers, the initiative also offers greater resilience against global disruptions and paves the way for regional growth opportunities.
