The Cessna Skylane, renowned for its rugged durability and impressive performance, is marking 70 years of flight this month. Since its first take-off in September 1955, the high-performance, single-engine aircraft has become a trusted choice for aviators worldwide.
“The Skylane is designed to go the distance,” said Chris Crow, vice president, Piston & Utility Sales. “With modern avionics and a proven design, the 182 blends the latest innovations with a legacy of dependability.”
Developed in response to market demand for a tricycle gear version of the Cessna 180, the Skylane has grown into one of Textron Aviation’s most enduring success stories. More than 23,000 units have been delivered, serving personal operators, cadet organisations, and training programmes around the world. Its reputation for reliability and adaptability has made it a mainstay in both private and professional flying circles.
Over the decades, the aircraft has seen a series of variants, yet it continues to evolve with customer feedback. Recent updates include powered headset jacks, black instrument panels, and upgraded seating for enhanced comfort and durability—modern features that complement its classic strengths.
Powered by a 230-horsepower Lycoming engine and equipped with a McCauley three-blade constant-speed propeller, the Skylane delivers smooth climbs, impressive cruise speeds, and a useful load of 1,110 pounds. With a maximum range of 915 nautical miles and short take-off capability, it remains ideal for cross-country travel. The Garmin G1000 NXi avionics suite further enhances the cockpit experience with faster hardware, improved graphics, and wireless connectivity.
After seven decades, the Skylane remains a benchmark in piston-powered aviation—combining heritage, innovation, and proven performance in equal measure.
