LEONARDO UNVEILS “MICHELANGELO – THE SECURITY DOME” IN ROME

Leonardo has unveiled the Michelangelo Dome in Rome, a modular and multi-domain defence architecture designed to protect critical infrastructure from evolving air, sea, land and cyber threats.

Leonardo has revealed its latest advancement in multi-domain defence capability with the official launch of the Michelangelo Dome. The system was presented by Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Roberto Cingolani during an event at the Officine Farneto in Rome on 27 November 2025.

Designed to meet the rising complexity of global security challenges, Michelangelo Dome represents a modular, scalable and open architecture aimed at protecting critical infrastructure, sensitive urban spaces, and assets of national and European importance. Its development forms part of Leonardo’s broader strategy to reinforce its position as a leader in global security solutions.

Cingolani highlighted the need for technological innovation in a rapidly evolving threat environment, noting that defence must stay ahead as attacks grow more sophisticated and economical to execute. He emphasised that Michelangelo integrates advanced technologies, industrial capability and an expanded international vision in support of citizen, institutional and infrastructure security.

Rather than functioning as a single system, Michelangelo Dome operates as an integrated security architecture incorporating land, naval, air and space-based sensors with cyber-defence platforms, command-and-control systems, artificial intelligence and coordinated effectors. This multi-domain structure enables a dynamic protective dome able to detect, track and counter threats on a large scale, including hypersonic missiles, drone swarms and surface or subsurface attacks at sea, as well as ground-based incursions.

Advanced data fusion and predictive algorithms allow Michelangelo to anticipate hostile action, optimise response measures and automatically coordinate appropriate countermeasures. The system reinforces Leonardo’s standing as a European reference point in integrated security and contributes to strategic autonomy and resilience across NATO and European defence initiatives. The programme aligns with broader continental cooperation frameworks and supports the growth of Italian industrial excellence.
