Airweek 2026 in Middelburg attracted strong participation despite poor weather, with over 150 flight movements and no reported incidents.
Steady turnout despite poor weather
Airweek 2026 was held in Middelburg over the weekend, with participation maintained despite unfavourable weather conditions affecting arrivals.
Intermittent rain and low cloud on the Friday led to a number of pilots electing not to fly in. However, many attendees chose to travel by road, reflecting a safety-first approach while still supporting the event.
By Saturday, arrivals had increased, with an estimated 60 aircraft on site. Total flight movements over the course of the weekend exceeded 150.
Industry participation and programme content
The event was supported by a broad range of sponsors and exhibitors representing the recreational aviation sector. These included organisations providing aircraft, engines, avionics, insurance, fuel, and associated aviation services.
Regulatory and safety organisations were also present, including representatives from the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC), and Mayday SA.
A structured programme of talks and workshops was presented, covering topics such as accident investigation, aircraft maintenance practices, tyre care, and developments in the aircraft sales market.
Flying activities and community engagement
Operational activities formed a central part of the event. The South African Power Flying Association (SAPFA) conducted a navigation rally over a 25 nautical mile course, requiring precise flying and navigation within a defined corridor.
Various Aero Club sections were represented, including the Microlight and Sport Aeroplane Association of South Africa (MISASA), the South African Hang and Paragliding Association (SAHPA), and the South African Model Aircraft Association (SAMAA), with participation from pilots travelling from multiple provinces.
A notable outreach component was the Young Eagles initiative, where school learners were introduced to aviation through information sessions and introductory flights.
Safe conclusion to the event
Despite the weather-related challenges, Airweek 2026 concluded without any reported incidents or accidents, reflecting a strong safety culture among participants.
The event also included social and recognition elements, with awards presented for aircraft across various categories and a well-attended dinner forming part of the programme.
