FlySafair has issued operational safety guidance for the 2026 Easter peak, focusing on IATA-compliant lithium-ion battery transport and airport security efficiency.
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — FlySafair has released updated technical and safety guidance for passengers travelling with personal electronic devices (PEDs) and lithium-ion power banks ahead of the 2026 Easter holiday period. The initiative aims to enhance security throughput and ensure strict adherence to international safety standards during one of the region’s busiest travel windows.
Lithium-Ion Battery Safety and Compliance
In alignment with International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations and South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) mandates, the airline has reinforced the prohibition of spare lithium-ion batteries and power banks in checked luggage. These items must be transported exclusively within cabin baggage to allow for immediate crew intervention in the rare event of thermal runaway.
The regulatory framework specifies three tiers for energy storage devices:
- Under 100Wh: Permitted in carry-on baggage without prior airline approval.
- 100–160Wh: Requires airline approval; limited to two spare units per passenger.
- Over 160Wh: Prohibited for transport on passenger aircraft.
For devices where only milliamp hours (mAh) are indicated, the airline advises using the standard formula: $Wh = (mAh \div 1000) \times voltage$.
Optimising Security and Ground Operations
To mitigate delays at security screening points, FlySafair recommends that passengers ensure all electronics are easily accessible for inspection. Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair, noted that operational efficiency at the airport is significantly improved when passengers understand the simple battery rules and keep essential devices ready for scanning.
Furthermore, the carrier encourages the use of online platforms to manage baggage requirements prior to airport arrival. Adhering to carry-on size and weight allowances remains a critical factor in maintaining on-time performance, particularly when cabin space is at capacity during peak periods.
Sector Leadership and Performance
FlySafair continues to maintain its position as a leading low-cost carrier (LCC) in Southern Africa, having been recognised by Cirium for world-leading on-time performance. In 2025, the airline secured multiple honours at the SACAA Civil Aviation Industry Awards, including the Aviation Innovation and Aircraft Operator awards, alongside its fifth consecutive Skytrax Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa title.
