SUM AIR ORDERS ATR 72-600 AIRCRAFT TO SUPPORT REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY IN SOUTH KOREA

South Korea’s regional start-up airline SUM Air has placed an order for four ATR 72-600 aircraft, with additional purchase rights, as it builds out a network focused on underserved domestic and island routes.

FLEET ORDER TO SUPPORT NETWORK EXPANSION

The agreement includes four ATR 72-600 turboprops, along with four additional purchase rights, with deliveries scheduled from 2028.

The order was signed during the France–Korea bilateral economic forum in Seoul, reflecting broader cooperation between the two countries’ aviation and industrial sectors.

FOCUS ON REGIONAL AND ISLAND CONNECTIVITY

Founded in 2022, SUM Air commenced commercial operations in March 2026 following the receipt of its Air Operator Certificate earlier in the same month.

The airline aims to improve connectivity across underserved regions in South Korea, including island destinations and secondary cities, while also supporting short-haul international routes to neighbouring countries such as Japan and China.

Initial operations include routes such as Gimpo–Sacheon, with future expansion planned to island airports including Ulleungdo, Baengnyeongdo and Heuksando.

AIRCRAFT SELECTION ALIGNED TO OPERATING ENVIRONMENT

The ATR 72-600 has been selected for its suitability in short-haul and regional operations, particularly in environments with limited infrastructure or shorter runways.

The aircraft’s performance characteristics enable access to airports that may not be viable for jet operations, supporting the airline’s network strategy and regional mobility objectives.

BUILDING A REGIONAL AVIATION PLATFORM

The order represents a step in SUM Air’s longer-term strategy to develop a sustainable regional aviation model, supporting economic connectivity and regional development.

By combining fleet growth with targeted route development, the airline aims to strengthen domestic air transport links and contribute to broader mobility infrastructure in South Korea.
