Bell’s annual Flight Camp in Amarillo, Texas, gives local middle school students a week-long introduction to engineering, aviation and advanced manufacturing, with the programme designed to build a pipeline of future talent for the company’s assembly operations.
A WEEK-LONG WINDOW INTO AEROSPACE
Bell hosts Flight Camp each summer in Amarillo, Texas, offering local middle school students aged 11 to 13 a structured introduction to aerospace and advanced manufacturing. The week-long programme introduces participants to engineering, aviation, supply chain and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pathways that underpin the region’s industrial future. For many students, Bell is already a familiar presence — its aircraft fly over their neighbourhoods and the company has long been a significant employer and community institution in the Texas Panhandle.
Bell’s Amarillo Assembly Center is a central component of the programme, assembling some of the company’s most advanced aircraft, including the V-22 Osprey and H-1 helicopter platforms. The site is recognised for its culture of safety, quality and innovation, and its workforce is drawn largely from the local community. The Assembly Center serves as both the operational backdrop and the culmination of the Flight Camp experience, with students visiting the facility at the end of the week.
CURRICULUM AND HANDS-ON LEARNING
Flight Camp operates through the Badger Kids College programme at Amarillo College and forms part of a broader collaboration aimed at strengthening the region’s future workforce. Bell has led the development of the curriculum since 2019, providing an enriched learning environment supported by Amarillo College. Throughout the week, students take part in hands-on activities that mirror real-world problem solving, including building rubber band helicopters, model plane circuits and robotic arms. The programme covers a range of career pathways at Bell, from engineering and manufacturing to operations, supply chain and support functions.
Sonja Clark, Amarillo Site Leader, said the hope was for participants to leave with a genuine affinity for Bell and to follow a path towards internships and employment with the company. She noted that people in the community regularly shared how memorable and formative the Flight Camp experience had been for friends and family members.
INTERNS AND ROLE MODELS
Summer interns play an integral role in the programme, serving as camp counsellors throughout the week. They assist with classroom activities, provide logistical support and mentorship, and act as positive role models for the younger students. By sharing their own educational and professional experiences, interns help to make career pathways tangible and accessible, supporting the development of interpersonal and professional skills among participants.
Clark added that the programme broadened students’ awareness of Bell’s operations significantly, helping them understand that careers in aerospace extend well beyond piloting or aircraft construction to encompass design, procurement, repairs and other support functions. Students leave with an understanding of the teamwork and collaboration required to sustain Bell’s mission, and with a clearer sense of where their own strengths and interests might fit within it.
