Garmin has announced Mobile Clearance Delivery for Garmin Pilot, a new capability developed in collaboration with the FAA and MITRE that allows instrument-rated pilots with a Premium subscription on iOS to receive and accept IFR clearances electronically within the app, reducing radio frequency congestion, minimising readback errors and streamlining the pre-departure workflow.
IFR CLEARANCE MOVES INTO THE APP: LESS RADIO, MORE CLARITY
Garmin has introduced Mobile Clearance Delivery as a new feature within the Garmin Pilot app, providing a more streamlined method for general and business aviation pilots to obtain instrument flight rules clearances at select airports in the United States without requiring radio or telephone contact with air traffic control. The feature is integrated into the new Flights page in Garmin Pilot and is available to Premium subscribers on iOS devices. Mobile Clearance Delivery was developed in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration and MITRE and remains in its operational test and evaluation phase, with a limited rollout at five initial airports and a planned nationwide expansion in phases through 2028.
Carl Wolf, Garmin Vice President of Aviation Sales, Marketing, Programmes and Support, said Mobile Clearance Delivery was another example of how Garmin continued to integrate the planning and flying experience in ways meaningful to pilots, helping reduce workload, improve clarity and save valuable time for both pilots and air traffic control.
HOW THE FEATURE WORKS IN PRACTICE
For instrument pilots departing airports where Pre-Departure Clearance or Data Comm services are not currently available, obtaining an IFR clearance has traditionally required a radio call or telephone contact with ATC — a step that can contribute to frequency congestion during busy periods and introduces the risk of readback errors. Mobile Clearance Delivery replaces this process with an in-app workflow. After filing an IFR flight plan in Garmin Pilot, users at Mobile Clearance Delivery-capable airports will see the feature appear in the Flights page within 30 minutes of the planned departure. Pilots initiate a session, receive their clearance from ATC electronically, review it within the app and accept it with a ‘WILCO’ response.
Once accepted, the cleared route can be overlaid on the Garmin Pilot map and, where the aircraft is properly equipped, transmitted to compatible avionics via Connext. The textual clearance remains accessible from the Flights page before departure and for 48 hours after, serving as a reference throughout the flight. A future enhancement will extend the capability to allow IFR flight cancellation directly within the app after landing at supporting airports — particularly useful at uncontrolled airports or Class D towered airports when the tower is closed.
CURRENT AIRPORTS, ROLLOUT TIMELINE AND FEEDBACK
The five airports currently operational for the test and evaluation phase are New Century AirCenter (KIXD) in Kansas — Garmin’s home airport adjacent to its Olathe headquarters — Hooks Field (KDWH), Sugar Land Regional Airport (KSGR) and Galveston Scholes International Airport (KGLS) in Texas, and Appleton International Airport (KATW) in Wisconsin. Pilots attending EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and departing from Appleton on an IFR flight plan are specifically invited to try the feature.
