NEW SWARTLAND AERODROME TO OPEN WITH A 1,241-METRE RUNWAY AND PLANNED GNSS APPROACH, ADDING GENERAL AVIATION CAPACITY NEAR CAPE TOWN

Atlantic Aerodrome, a privately developed general aviation and turboprop facility approximately 40 minutes from Cape Town, will open with a grooved asphalt runway, full LED lighting for 24-hour operations and a planned GNSS instrument approach, designed in accordance with ICAO Annex 14 and SACAA Part 139 standards.

THE RUNWAY MAKES THE CONCEPT

 

A new privately developed aerodrome is to open in the Swartland region of the Western Cape, approximately 40 minutes from Cape Town, offering hangarage, fixed base operator services, fuel, maintenance and flight training for general aviation and turboprop operations. The airfield’s principal specification is Runway 02/20, a grooved asphalt strip of 1,241 metres with provision to extend to 1,525 metres in a subsequent phase. It will have full LED lighting supporting 24-hour operations and a planned GNSS instrument approach, with the development stated to be designed in accordance with applicable ICAO Annex 14 and South African Civil Aviation Authority Part 139 standards.

 

The runway length and the planned extension are the figures that determine what the facility can actually accommodate, and the difference between them is significant. At 1,241 metres the field comfortably serves piston singles and twins and the lighter end of the turboprop range, but the calculation tightens considerably for heavier turboprops and light jets operating at maximum weight, in high ambient temperatures, or with a wet surface. An extension to 1,525 metres would materially widen the range of types able to use the field at useful payloads. The grooved surface is a wet-runway measure, improving drainage and reducing the risk of hydroplaning.

 

The planned GNSS instrument approach is the other specification with operational consequence. A field with lighting but no instrument approach is limited to visual operations in poor weather, which for an aerodrome intended to support business and training flying is a meaningful constraint on dispatch reliability. A satellite-based approach requires no ground navigation infrastructure, which is why it has become the practical route to instrument capability for airfields of this size.

 

SERVICES AND SUPPORT

 

Hangarage will be enclosed, with 24-hour biometric security and direct airside access, and is offered across a range of sizes from individual owner aircraft through to multi-aircraft operators, flight schools and charter operations. Fuel available will comprise Mogas, Avgas 100LL and Jet A-1, with bulk arrangements and 24-hour mobile refuelling. The inclusion of Mogas alongside Avgas is worth noting: a significant number of piston aircraft hold supplemental type certificates permitting motor gasoline, which is materially cheaper than Avgas, and its availability at a field is a real operating cost factor for owners able to use it.

 

The site will also host an approved flight training organisation offering private pilot licence, commercial pilot licence and instrument rating training, alongside cleaning and ground handling, certified aircraft maintenance organisation partners and planned on-site avionics support. A two-level clubhouse of approximately 2,100 square metres will house restaurant and bar facilities, lounges, pilot facilities and event space, with the restaurant and viewing deck open to the public.

 

CAPACITY IN A CONSTRAINED REGION

 

The development is presented as a response to demand for lower-congestion general aviation facilities in the Western Cape. The underlying pressure is one common across the sector internationally: as commercial traffic grows at a primary airport, general aviation faces rising handling costs, tighter slot availability and competition for apron and hangar space, and progressively relocates to secondary fields. Additional capacity within reasonable driving distance of a major city addresses that displacement directly, and a new field designed from the outset around general aviation requirements rather than accommodating them alongside airline operations starts from a different position.

 

Shane Harrison, the aerodrome’s founder, said aircraft owners often spent their time concerned with access, security, congestion or finding hangar space, and that the intention was to create a facility people would look forward to using. The development will launch with hangarage, FBO services, the clubhouse and guest accommodation.
