Air Cairo has signed a firm order for 15 Airbus A320neo aircraft at the El Alamein International Airshow, its first move into direct aircraft ownership as it targets a fleet of more than 130 aircraft by 2034.
AIR CAIRO PLACES FIRST-EVER DIRECT AIRCRAFT ORDER, TARGETS FLEET OF 130-PLUS BY 2034
Air Cairo, the Egyptian leisure and scheduled carrier majority-owned by EgyptAir, has signed a firm order for 15 Airbus A320neo aircraft at the El Alamein International Airshow 2026. The agreement marks the airline’s first direct aircraft purchase: its fleet to date has been entirely leased. Having grown from seven aircraft five years ago to more than 45 today, Air Cairo is aiming for a fleet exceeding 130 aircraft by 2034, and says the order gives it the capacity, flexibility and operational efficiency to expand its domestic, regional and international networks.
WHY DIRECT OWNERSHIP MATTERS
Airlines typically build early fleets through operating leases, which spread the capital cost of aircraft and avoid the residual-value risk of owning them outright, but come with lease-return conditions and less control over how long an aircraft is kept in service. Moving to a mix of owned and leased aircraft gives an airline more flexibility to hold aircraft for longer, finance them on its own terms, and configure them without a lessor’s constraints, at the cost of taking on the asset risk directly. “This agreement represents a natural next step in AIRCAIRO’s growth,” said Hussein Sherif, Chairman & CEO, Air Cairo. “Combining owned aircraft with our leased fleet gives us greater operational flexibility and financial efficiency as we scale up. The A320neo will provide the capacity needed to expand our network, serve the growing demand for travel to and from Egypt, and support the country’s aviation and tourism sectors in close partnership with Airbus.”
AIRBUS POINTS TO A RETURNING CUSTOMER
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business, framed the order as confirmation of an existing relationship rather than a new one: “We are delighted that this first direct acquisition from AIRCAIRO reaffirms the airline’s confidence in the A320neo to power its next phase of growth. The A320neo provides AIRCAIRO with the efficiency and flexibility to scale up its network. This commitment highlights the strength of our partnership and AIRCAIRO’s confidence in the A320neo to expand connectivity between Egypt and key international destinations.” Airbus says the A320 Family has now won more than 20,200 orders globally, and cites at least 20 percent fuel and CO2 savings for the neo generation over previous-generation single-aisle aircraft.
