GE Aerospace has announced a 225 million dollar investment to modernise its Research Center in Niskayuna, New York, a site the company says has served for more than 75 years as the innovation engine behind its aviation breakthroughs. The State of New York is contributing 8.4 million dollars in tax credits through Empire State Development, with the Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority adding a further 5.3 million dollars in local incentives; roughly two-thirds of the combined investment will go toward infrastructure improvements, with the remainder directed to advanced research equipment and technology. The project is expected to create 75 new full-time research, engineering and trade positions over five years, alongside short-term construction jobs, at a centre that today works across artificial intelligence, autonomy, robotics, advanced materials, future manufacturing, hypersonic propulsion and hybrid electric flight, including projects with the Department of Energy and Department of War. “The future of flight is developed through rigorous scientific and technical pursuit spanning decades. We are ready to turn this investment into breakthroughs that will define the next era of aviation,” said Joseph Vinciquerra, General Manager and Senior Executive Director of GE Aerospace Research. Site improvement work is expected to begin immediately, with GE Aerospace saying research operations will continue with minimal disruption throughout construction.

LOCAL AND POLITICAL REACTION

New York Governor Kathy Hochul welcomed the investment, saying the state had “a bold legacy of innovation, built on the shoulders of big ideas and big investments by globally renowned companies like GE Aerospace,” and that the announcement showed that “legacy is only getting stronger.” US Senator Chuck Schumer, who said he had “long supported the company’s growth in Upstate New York,” and Congressman Paul Tonko both welcomed the announcement, while Schenectady County Legislature chair Gary Hughes said the county’s economic development team had worked with the state “for more than a year to win this investment.”
