AIRBUS DEEPENS AFRICAN COMMITMENT WITH NEW CUSTOMER SUPPORT CENTRE IN JOHANNESBURG

In a strategic move that underscores its long-standing relationship with Africa’s aviation sector, Airbus has officially opened a new Customer Support Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. This development marks a significant milestone in nearly 50 years of partnership with the continent and is set to enhance the manufacturer’s support for commercial aircraft operators across Africa.

The Johannesburg-based facility will bring Airbus closer to its airline customers, offering enhanced proximity and a comprehensive range of support services. These include technical assistance, engineering and maintenance solutions, fleet performance analysis, training services, and on-site support for the full family of Airbus commercial aircraft — from the A220 and A320 to the A330 and A350.

“The new centre expands Airbus’ presence in Africa and underscores our confidence in the region’s potential, as we invest in local capabilities, empower our customers, drive connectivity and shared progress across the continent,” said Gabriel Semelas, President of Airbus in the Middle East and Africa.

Airbus has maintained a presence in Africa since 1976, with the delivery of the first A300 to the continent. Today, nearly 40 airlines across Africa operate more than 260 Airbus aircraft. According to its Global Services Forecast, the next 20 years will see a growing need for 14,000 new pilots and 21,000 engineers and mechanics to meet surging air travel demand in Africa.

The opening of the Johannesburg centre coincides with Airbus Helicopters’ celebration of 30 years of operations in Southern Africa. Based in Midrand, the Airbus Helicopters hub offers maintenance, spares, logistics support, and hosts the continent’s first H125 virtual reality simulator for pilot training.

Airbus Defence and Space also continues to support African governments with military aircraft, Earth observation services, and satellite connectivity solutions.

With over 180 African suppliers integrated into its global supply chain, Airbus plays a vital role in fostering the continent’s aerospace industry. From component manufacturing and maintenance services to training partnerships and technology transfer, Airbus’ expanding industrial footprint supports job creation, skills development, and sustainable economic growth throughout Africa.
