AIRBUS, WITS UNIVERSITY AND ISAE-SUPAERO SIGN AGREEMENT TO BOOST SOUTH AFRICA’S AEROSPACE CAPABILITIES

Airbus Southern Africa, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the Institut Superieur de l’Aeronautique et de l’Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO) have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a four-year strategic collaboration intended to bridge advanced aeronautical education with aerospace manufacturing and design. Under the agreement, Wits and ISAE-SUPAERO will align their aerospace engineering curricula through gap analysis and mapping, supported by a reciprocal faculty exchange programme between Johannesburg and Toulouse, and Wits students will gain access to specialised aerospace Master’s programmes and research methodologies in France. “This collaboration connects academic excellence with industrial expertise to empower the next generation of South African aeronautical engineers,” said Nam-Binh Hoang, Airbus Country Representative in South Africa. “By combining the local expertise of Wits University, the world-class aerospace training of ISAE-SUPAERO, and Airbus operational footprint, we are building a sustainable talent pipeline that supports both local innovation and global aerospace standards.”

OVERSIGHT, OUTREACH AND A FOUR-YEAR TIMELINE

The agreement establishes dedicated operational and executive oversight teams across all three institutions, with regular progress reviews over its four-year term, and extends beyond the classroom to general aviation awareness activities, with Airbus offering Wits students design-thinking mentorship and potential undergraduate aviation courses. Note: Wits’ National Aerospace Centre already runs South Africa’s principal aeronautical engineering programme; this agreement builds a formal international pipeline on top of that existing base rather than establishing aerospace teaching at Wits from scratch.
