AT ALTITUDE WITH ROMAIN MAUBAN – WORLD PARAMOTOR CHAMPION

Romain Mauban, Deputy Director of the CFM56 Programme at Safran Aircraft Engines, is not only an aerospace professional but also a leading figure in ultralight aviation. In 2025, he secured the French Championship title in paramotoring and represented France at the World Championships in Chambley.

Mauban’s journey in aviation began with an engineering degree from ESTACA, followed by a career at Safran that started in 2013. Alongside his professional responsibilities, he discovered paramotoring after a paragliding course during his studies, later obtaining his licence in 2018. Since then, the sport has become a true passion.

Paramotoring, one of six ultralight aviation disciplines, allows pilots to take off from flat ground with a motor strapped to their back. It combines the simplicity of paragliding with the versatility of powered flight, offering affordable access to the skies. The “foot launch” category, Mauban’s speciality, requires running to inflate the wing before takeoff.

Competition events test a variety of skills: manoeuvrability challenges precision landings and turns, navigation demands rigorous timekeeping on mapped routes, while fuel economy events push pilots to cover distance with minimal fuel. In Chambley, Mauban was leading the World Championship before an engine issue forced him out of contention, dropping him to sixth place. Despite the setback, Team France secured the overall world title.

Balancing his career at Safran with high-level sport requires discipline. Training sessions often take place early in the morning or late in the evening, supported by complementary fitness work to build endurance. Looking ahead, Mauban plans to defend his national title in 2026 and return stronger for the next World Championships in 2027.

When asked which aircraft he would choose over a paramotor, his answer was immediate: the Rafale. His message to aspiring pilots is equally clear—try an introductory paramotor flight. “The flight is very simple and offers unique sensations,” he says.

Mauban’s record highlights his consistency: French Champion in 2025, Endurance World Champion in 2024, and multiple podium finishes in national and international competitions since 2021. With his blend of professional expertise and competitive passion, he continues to inspire both colleagues and fellow aviators.
