AVIATION INDUSTRY DOUBLES DOWN ON CYBERSECURITY AS IT SPEND CLIMBS TO NEW HIGHS

GENEVA – February 2025 – The aviation industry is intensifying its investment in cybersecurity, biometrics, and sustainable IT solutions as digital threats grow and passenger numbers soar. According to SITA’s 2024 Air Transport IT Insights report, 74% of airlines and 72% of airports anticipate an increase in IT spending over the next two years, reinforcing the sector’s commitment to safer, more seamless, and sustainable air travel. In 2024 alone, total IT expenditure in aviation was estimated at $37 billion for airlines and nearly $9 billion for airports.

Cybersecurity Takes Priority

Cybersecurity has emerged as a top concern, with 66% of airlines and 73% of airports ranking it among their three primary focus areas. With digital threats becoming more sophisticated, airlines and airports are strengthening their IT infrastructure, shifting to cloud-based solutions, and implementing robust data protection measures.

David Lavorel, CEO of SITA, highlighted this shift:
“This year’s findings highlight a pivotal moment for aviation. As cyber threats grow more complex, airlines and airports are taking decisive action to protect their operations and passengers. At the same time, biometrics and AI are simplifying travel, helping the industry meet rising demand and enhancing resilience. These numbers prove the industry is transforming.”

From Safer Skies to Seamless Journeys

Biometric technology is revolutionising passenger processing, with over 50% of airports planning to implement biometric check-in and bag drop by 2026. 70% of airlines expect to introduce biometric ID management within the same timeframe, a move that could reduce congestion, cut wait times by up to 60%, and improve overall passenger experience.

The adoption of AI and data analytics is also gaining traction. Airlines are leveraging generative AI and machine learning to optimise flight operations, enhance customer service, and improve fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, airports are using data platforms and predictive analytics to streamline passenger flow and operational decision-making. Notably, 90% of airlines have already adopted data platforms, with 42% exploring AI-driven data organisation.

“The air transport industry generates vast amounts of data, yet much of it remains untapped,” Lavorel explained. “With AI and machine learning, we can extract meaningful insights to drive efficiency, sustainability, security, and cost savings while enhancing the passenger experience.”

Sustainability Through Smart IT

The push toward net-zero emissions by 2050 is also shaping aviation’s IT strategy. The report shows that:

  • 75% of airlines now use real-time flight optimisation software to reduce emissions and enhance efficiency.
  • 62% of airlines are collaborating with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) suppliers, marking a significant increase over the past year.
  • 54% of airports have implemented energy management systems, up from 29% in 2023, showing substantial progress in environmental initiatives.

“Sustainability is essential for the future of aviation. It’s a responsibility we must embrace to drive lasting change,” said Lavorel. “By leveraging advanced analytics, flight optimisation software, and SAF, we are taking measurable steps toward a greener industry.”

Middle East & Africa (MEA): A Unique Landscape

In the Middle East and Africa (MEA), the focus is on passenger management, with 76% of airports prioritising it over cybersecurity. Investment in passenger processing systems is the leading IT priority (78% vs 63% globally). However, financial constraints remain a challenge, with 37% of MEA airports citing budget limitations as a barrier to IT projects.

“Without smart investments in reliable and innovative technology, airports risk falling behind, becoming inefficient and uncompetitive,” said Selim Bouri, MEA President, SITA. “This doesn’t just lead to longer wait times and frustration—it also impacts revenue streams that keep airports profitable.”

Future-Proofing Air Travel

As passenger volumes rise and environmental demands increase, the aviation industry is embracing tech-driven solutions to secure operations, streamline travel, and drive sustainability.
