AVOLON AND AIR NEW ZEALAND UNITE TO PIONEER CLEAN TECH AIRCRAFT SOLUTIONS

January 2025 – Dublin: Avolon, a global leader in aviation finance, has joined forces with Air New Zealand to accelerate the development and commercialisation of next-generation clean tech aircraft. This partnership marks a significant step forward in the aviation industry’s efforts to decarbonise air travel and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

At the core of this agreement is a memorandum of understanding between the two companies to explore novel propulsion technologies, including electric, battery hybrid, and hydrogen-powered aircraft. The partnership also includes a letter of intent (LOI) for the sale and leaseback of a BETA Alia CX300 electric cargo aircraft, marking Air New Zealand’s first commercial order under its Mission Next Gen Aircraft programme.

Supporting Sustainable Aviation

The BETA Alia CX300, a cutting-edge electric cargo aircraft, is slated for delivery in 2026. With a cargo capacity of up to 560 kilograms, the aircraft will be deployed to serve routes between Wellington and Blenheim in partnership with New Zealand Post. This small but impactful trial represents a vital learning opportunity for Air New Zealand as it evaluates the operational, regulatory, and financial requirements for integrating clean tech aircraft into its fleet.

Both Avolon and Air New Zealand are committed to driving sustainable innovation within the aviation industry. Avolon CEO Andy Cronin emphasised the critical role of lessors in advancing clean tech solutions, stating, “This partnership with Air New Zealand reflects Avolon’s commitment to supporting innovation, building on our investments in Vertical Aerospace and our collaboration with Airbus’ ZEROe Project.”

Air New Zealand’s Chief Financial Officer, Richard Thomson, echoed this sentiment, noting, “Introducing new technology into aviation requires collective effort across regulators, supply chains, and financing partners. This partnership with Avolon is an important step in shaping the future of our Next Generation Aircraft programme.”

A Collaborative Approach

Air New Zealand’s Mission Next Gen Aircraft programme has engaged over 30 organisations to identify viable technologies for future air travel. The airline’s collaboration with BETA Technologies and its focus on sustainable solutions highlight its dedication to addressing aviation’s environmental challenges.

Avolon, known for its strategic investments in future technologies, continues to play a pivotal role in the evolution of sustainable aviation. Beyond its partnership with Air New Zealand, Avolon has invested in eVTOL manufacturer Vertical Aerospace and collaborated with Airbus on hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft through the ZEROe Project.

This collaboration between Avolon and Air New Zealand underscores the importance of shared vision and commitment in tackling the aviation sector’s sustainability goals.
