Oshkosh, Wisconsin — July 22, 2025. As global air travel continues its upward trajectory, Boeing has released its 2025 Pilot and Technician Outlook (PTO), forecasting a substantial 20-year demand for nearly 2.4 million new aviation professionals. The announcement, made at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, underscores the urgent need for investment in training and workforce development to sustain the expanding global commercial fleet.
According to Boeing, between now and 2044 the industry will require:
- 660,000 new pilots
- 710,000 maintenance technicians
- 1,000,000 cabin crew members
The forecast reflects both the need to replace an ageing workforce and to support growing air traffic volumes, particularly in rapidly developing regions. “As commercial air traffic demand continues to outpace economic growth and the global fleet expands to meet demand, our industry must prioritise workforce development to keep the fleet flying safely and efficiently,” said Chris Broom, vice president of Commercial Training Solutions, Boeing Global Services.
Emerging markets and the continued shift toward single-aisle aircraft are among the primary drivers of personnel growth. The PTO reveals that two-thirds of new hires will replace retiring or departing staff, while one-third will support fleet expansion.
Key Regional Highlights through 2044:
- China will require 426,000 new personnel
- Eurasia leads with 550,000
- North America follows with 435,000
- Southeast Asia and South Asia emerge as the fastest-growing markets, with demand in both regions expected to more than triple
Boeing is also embracing advanced technology to enhance training efficiency. From AI-driven learning platforms to immersive mixed reality environments, the training landscape is undergoing a digital transformation. These tools aim to improve situational awareness and operational readiness while maintaining Boeing’s core competency-based assessment methodology.
In line with its global impact, Boeing continues to deliver training products and services tailored to the evolving needs of airlines and aviation schools worldwide. With demand for skilled professionals climbing, the forecast signals a call to action for the entire aviation ecosystem to expand capacity, modernise training, and inspire the next generation of aviation professionals.
