BRUSSELS AIRPORT HARNESSES IES’ DIGITAL TWIN TO CHART COURSE FOR NET ZERO FUTURE

In a bid to map out its journey towards net zero emissions by 2030, Brussels Airport in Belgium has turned to climate tech firm IES and its cutting-edge digital twin technology. As part of the EU’s Stargate initiative, this ambitious project received a significant boost with a €24.8 million grant from the European Commission’s Green Deal funds.

The digital twin, a virtual replica of Brussels Airport (Zaventem), served as a crucial tool in assessing various climate solutions, including the installation of solar panels and electric vehicle (EV) chargers. By simulating the impact of these technologies, the airport aimed to identify the most effective path towards achieving net zero emissions.

Christel Vandenhouten, head of sustainable development at Brussels Airport, highlighted the significance of deploying zero-carbon solutions within airport buildings, noting the potential for substantial reductions in scope 1 and 2 emissions. The digital twin focused on the airport’s 40 most energy-intensive buildings, marking a pioneering effort in using virtual modelling for large-scale decarbonisation initiatives within an airport setting.

“While there is still much work to be done, digital twin technology can help us simulate the impact of various net-zero solutions, so we can move forward with confidence in achieving the ambitious targets we have set,” Vandenhouten commented.

IES revealed that its simulation of energy-saving measures, such as replacing gas boilers with heat pumps, indicated a potential 63% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to 2019 levels. Giulia Barbano, research and development operations manager for IES, emphasised the complexity of airport operations and the necessity for evidence-backed decisions, underscoring the pivotal role of digital twin technology in facilitating such transitions.

Brussels Airport’s adoption of IES’ technology underscores the aviation industry’s growing commitment to leveraging advanced tools to advance net zero ambitions.
