CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF THE DH60 MOTH AT RAND AIRPORT

Aviators and aviation enthusiasts gathered in force at Rand Airport over the weekend to commemorate a remarkable milestone—the 100th anniversary of the DH60 Moth. This iconic aircraft, often regarded as the grandfather of the legendary DH82 Tiger Moth, first took to the skies on 22 February 1925, piloted by Geoffrey de Havilland himself. Designed to make aviation accessible to the everyday person, the DH60 quickly became a success, shaping the course of private and training aviation.

The event at Rand Airport was a vibrant tribute to this historic aircraft, featuring formation practice flights, detailed briefings, and multiple four-ship practice runs throughout the day.

Pilots and spectators alike relished the opportunity to engage with one another, sharing their passion for classic aviation against the lively backdrop of a Dixie band brought in especially for the occasion.

With the sound of vintage engines roaring overhead and the spirit of early aviation alive in every conversation, the celebration was a fitting tribute to a century of the DH60 Moth’s enduring legacy.
