AEROSHARK INNOVATION TAKES FLIGHT ON AUSTRIAN AIRLINES BOEING 777-200ER

VIENNA, AUSTRIA (January 2025) – Austrian Airlines has achieved a significant milestone in aviation sustainability with the successful maiden flight of its first Boeing 777-200ER equipped with the groundbreaking AeroSHARK surface technology. The long-haul aircraft, registered OE-LPC, completed its inaugural journey from Bangkok to Vienna under flight number OS26, following recent certification of the technology by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

AeroSHARK, a pioneering surface film technology developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, mimics the microscopic texture of sharkskin to optimize airflow around the aircraft fuselage and engine nacelles. This innovation enables fuel savings of approximately one percent and reduces CO₂ emissions, aligning with Austrian Airlines’ sustainability goals.

The modifications to Austrian Airlines’ Boeing 777-200ER fleet were carried out during scheduled maintenance visits, ensuring operational continuity. Four of the airline’s six Boeing 777-200ER aircraft are expected to be fully equipped with AeroSHARK by March 2025.

“With this certification, the fleet-wide implementation of our sharkskin technology on 777-200ER aircraft can begin, supporting airlines worldwide to enhance operational efficiency and achieve their environmental goals,” stated Harald Gloy, Chief Operating Officer of Lufthansa Technik.

Francesco Sciortino, Chief Operating Officer of Austrian Airlines, emphasized the importance of this investment:
“Reducing our CO₂ emissions in flight operations is at the center of our sustainability efforts. The application of the ‘sharkskin’ developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF is an important investment that will enable us to fly our long-haul aircraft more efficiently.”

Austrian Airlines estimates that its AeroSHARK-modified Boeing 777-200ER fleet will save approximately 2,650 metric tons of kerosene and reduce around 8,300 metric tons of CO₂ emissions by 2028. This reduction equates to approximately 46 direct flights between Vienna and New York.

AeroSHARK has already been successfully deployed across 22 Boeing 777 aircraft from six different airlines within the Lufthansa Group and beyond. Lufthansa Technik and BASF remain committed to expanding the application of this technology to additional aircraft types, contributing to a greener future for global aviation.
