EMBRAER TAKES THE ETHANOL-POWERED IPANEMA 203 TO BRAZIL’S AGRICULTURAL AVIATION CONGRESS WITH MORE THAN HALF ITS MARKET

Embraer will demonstrate the Ipanema 203 at the Brazilian Agricultural Aviation Congress in Goiás from 18 to 20 August. The aircraft holds more than 50 per cent share of the domestic cropduster segment, has run on 100 per cent ethanol for over two decades, and can spray more than 200 hectares an hour.

TWO DECADES ON ETHANOL, AND MORE THAN 1,700 DELIVERED

 

Embraer will participate in the Brazilian Agricultural Aviation Congress from 18 to 20 August in Goianápolis, Goiás, showcasing the Ipanema 203 and performing a demonstration flight for operators, farmers and other participants. The aircraft is Brazil’s best-selling agricultural aircraft with more than 1,700 delivered and holds more than 50 per cent market share in its segment. Powered by ethanol for more than 20 years, it combines what the manufacturer describes as advanced technology, reliability, high productivity, precision and low operating costs.

 

The ethanol point deserves more attention than it usually receives. Aviation’s decarbonisation discussion is dominated by sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen and electrification — technologies at varying stages of certification and infrastructure development. The Ipanema has been operating on 100 per cent ethanol in commercial service for over two decades, which makes it a rare case of an aircraft that solved its fuel question long ago and has been flying on the answer ever since. Brazil’s ethanol production and distribution infrastructure is the reason this was possible, which is also why the solution has not travelled: the aircraft’s fuel advantage is inseparable from the agricultural economy it serves.

 

PRODUCTIVITY AS THE COMMERCIAL ARGUMENT

 

The performance case Embraer makes is quantified. The Ipanema is capable of spraying more than 200 hectares per hour, a performance the manufacturer equates to four large ground sprayers operating simultaneously. Beyond throughput, aerial application avoids the crop damage caused by ground equipment moving through a standing crop, and helps prevent the spread of pests through soil contact, the mechanism by which ground machinery can carry disease between fields. Embraer states the aircraft can contribute to yield gains of up to 15 bags per hectare depending on crop type and operating conditions.

 

Sany Onofre, Embraer’s Agricultural Aviation leader, said the company was honoured to participate again in the congress, organised by the National Agricultural Aviation Companies Union, describing it as an opportunity to showcase solutions helping increase the efficiency of agricultural operations by combining productivity, safety and lower operating costs. Alongside the demonstration flight, Embraer will join discussions with representatives from across the agricultural sector addressing the challenges and opportunities facing agricultural aviation in Brazil, including the role of technology in productivity, efficiency, sustainability and operational safety.
