Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s largest carrier and one of the fastest growing global airline brands, has inaugurated its new airport project in Yabello, located in the southern part of Oromia Regional State, alongside the launch of new passenger services to the facility.
The milestone event was attended by senior government officials, airline executives, community representatives, and various stakeholders, underscoring the importance of the project to Ethiopia’s aviation landscape and regional connectivity.
Constructed at a cost exceeding 1 billion ETB, the new airport is situated 11 kilometres from Yabello Town in the Borena Zone. The development includes a new airfield, access roads, a temporary terminal, and supporting facilities.
Commenting on the achievement, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew said: “The completion of the Yabello Airport project demonstrates Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to advancing aviation infrastructure that transforms lives and connects communities across Ethiopia. This is a transformative moment for the local community and the entire region, and as the flag carrier of Ethiopia, we are proud to have made this moment a reality.”
The Yabello airport is expected to have a significant impact on the region, enhancing trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people interaction. By improving accessibility to southern Oromia, the facility will foster socio-economic growth and contribute to Ethiopia’s national development strategy.
As part of its broader domestic aviation initiatives, Ethiopian Airlines continues to expand infrastructure, bridging communities while driving sustainable growth and development across the country.
