Connecting Skies • Bridging Continents

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES LAUNCHES NEW PASSENGER SERVICE TO SHARJAH, UAE

Addis Ababa, 01 June 2025 – In a move that strengthens air connectivity between Africa and the Gulf, Ethiopian Airlines has inaugurated a new passenger service to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The new route—launched on 1 June 2025—marks the airline’s second passenger destination in the UAE, reinforcing its growing presence in the Middle East.

A vibrant inaugural ceremony marked the commencement of the route, attended by ambassadors, senior government officials, and Ethiopian Airlines executives. The four-times-weekly service is set to enhance not only travel convenience but also deepen diplomatic, trade, and tourism ties between the two regions.

Expanding the Network

We are truly delighted to connect our passengers to an additional getaway in the UAE with our new flights to Sharjah,” said Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. “We have been connecting the UAE and Africa for nearly five decades now, and this new service will help boost investment, tourism, diplomatic and socioeconomic bonds between the two regions.”

The addition of Sharjah complements Ethiopian’s longstanding cargo operations to the city, extending its reach into one of the UAE’s most dynamic and historically rich emirates. Passengers now have a seamless travel option that combines access to Ethiopian’s vast African network with Sharjah’s position as a strategic Gulf gateway.

Cultural and Commercial Significance

Sharjah, the third-largest emirate in the UAE, is widely recognised as the cultural capital of the country. It is also emerging as a key player in eco-tourism, education, and manufacturing, with its eastern and central regions driving growth in adventure tourism and sustainable development.

The new service is expected to fuel demand in multiple sectors, from hospitality and leisure to retail, food and beverage, and entertainment. Ethiopian’s entry into the Sharjah market will support both business and leisure travellers, leveraging the airline’s modern fleet and commitment to world-class customer service.

Strengthening Africa–Middle East Aviation Links

The launch reflects Ethiopian Airlines’ broader strategic vision to enhance its intercontinental reach. With state-of-the-art facilities at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and a global reputation for operational excellence, the airline continues to set benchmarks for African aviation.

This new route not only reinforces its position as Africa’s largest network carrier, but also contributes to broader economic integration between Africa and the Gulf region.
