FRANCE BACKS DASSAULT AVIATION’S VORTEX SPACEPLANE DEVELOPMENT

A significant leap in European aerospace ambitions was announced with the French Ministry of the Armed Forces pledging support for Dassault Aviation’s VORTEX spaceplane demonstrator. French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Dassault Chairman and CEO Eric Trappier confirmed the agreement, marking a bold step toward France’s next-generation orbital capabilities.

The demonstrator is the first phase in the VORTEX roadmap (Véhicule Orbital Réutilisable de Transport et d’Exploration), aimed at developing a family of reusable spaceplanes that blend civil and military applications for orbital transport and autonomous missions.

A Strategic Dual-Use Space Platform

Designed as a dual-purpose vehicle, the VORTEX spaceplane addresses a wide range of missions—from transporting cargo to and from orbit, to acting as an autonomous platform for both civilian and defence-oriented space operations. The project is fully aligned with France’s goal to reinforce national sovereignty in the aerospace domain.

The VORTEX demonstrator will explore critical flight technologies, including:

  • Hypersonic flight control
  • Advanced thermal protection systems
  • Precision flight control architecture

These core technologies are key to reducing risk and uncertainty ahead of future operational deployment.

A Legacy of Aerospace Innovation

VORTEX builds on Dassault Aviation’s vast experience in aeronautics and space, leveraging its role as architect and integrator of complex airborne systems. The company draws from its work on iconic European space programmes such as Hermès, X-38, and IXV, reinforcing the credibility and depth of expertise behind the project.

Adopting a NewSpace-inspired approach, Dassault is streamlining the development cycle through agile innovation, focusing on:

  • Accelerated maturation of disruptive technologies
  • Optimised cost-efficiency and risk mitigation
  • Shorter development timelines without compromising technical excellence

A Vision for the Future of Space Aeronautics

“Like Dassault Aviation’s civil and military aircraft, the VORTEX spaceplane is designed to be highly versatile,” said Eric Trappier.
“It will contribute to transforming the uses of the space sector and opening up new fields of application. At the crossroads of aviation and space technologies, the VORTEX will undoubtedly pave the way for a new generation of space aeronautics, consolidating France’s strategic position as a leading space power.”

With this partnership, France reaffirms its leadership in space innovation, and Dassault Aviation steps confidently into a new era—where the boundaries between sky and orbit are increasingly blurred.
