London, 26 March 2025 – A milestone in commercial aviation was reached today as Helvetic Airways, operating on behalf of Swiss International Air Lines, successfully landed the first Embraer E195-E2 at London City Airport. The aircraft is now the largest jet to operate from the airport, further solidifying London City’s reputation as a hub for next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft.
This marks the second time Helvetic Airways has made history at London City. In 2021, the Swiss regional airline was the first to land an Embraer E190-E2 at the airport. Now, with the 41.5-metre-long E195-E2, boasting 134 seats and the lowest fuel consumption per seat of any aircraft operating from the airport, the carrier continues to push boundaries.
Meeting London City’s Unique Challenges
London City Airport’s steep approach demands specially trained flight crews and aircraft with advanced capabilities. Helvetic Airways has demonstrated both, successfully operating Embraer’s new-generation jets at the airport.
“Bringing the E195-E2 to London City is a proud achievement for Helvetic Airways, reinforcing our commitment to innovation and efficiency,” said Tobias Pogorevc, CEO of Helvetic Airways. “We remain the only airline in the world to operate three different Embraer aircraft into London City, giving our wet-lease customers unparalleled flexibility.”
The historic flight took off from Zurich at 11:30 AM and touched down at London City shortly after midday, marking the beginning of scheduled operations for this aircraft type at the airport.
A Step Towards Sustainable Aviation
Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, welcomed the arrival of the E195-E2, highlighting its environmental benefits.
“We are committed to working with airlines and manufacturers to introduce cleaner, quieter, next-generation aircraft,” said FitzGerald. “The E195-E2 will unlock new destinations while allowing us to manage our passenger growth within our flight movement cap.”
Marie-Louise Philippe, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing, Embraer Commercial Aviation, echoed this sentiment.
“London City has always been a key location for Embraer, with 75% of flights operating on our aircraft. The E195-E2 represents a new era—offering 30% lower CO₂ emissions per seat and a 63% smaller noise footprint compared to its predecessor,” Philippe stated.
Embraer is also developing the E2TS (Embraer Enhanced Takeoff System), the world’s first automatic takeoff system for commercial aircraft. Once certified, it will extend the E195-E2’s range from London City from 3,200 km to 4,000 km, enabling direct flights to destinations such as Istanbul, Gran Canaria, Casablanca, Athens, and Cairo.
