Honeywell and TotalEnergies are piloting an AI-assisted control room solution at the Port Arthur Refinery in Texas. The initiative enables operators to anticipate issues before they arise and supports the transition toward autonomous industrial operations.
Honeywell and TotalEnergies have announced the ongoing pilot of Honeywell’s AI-assisted Experion Operations Assistant at the Port Arthur Refinery in Texas. The initiative supports operators in making quicker, data-informed decisions while progressing the shift toward greater industrial autonomy.
Â
Built on Honeywell’s flagship Experion distributed control system, the AI-powered solution merges operational analytics with real-time predictive insights to enhance situational awareness and streamline control room workflows. By identifying potential maintenance events before they occur, the technology enables safer operations, reduced downtime and improved production efficiency.
Â
TotalEnergies has implemented the initial pilot within the refinery’s Delayed Coking Unit (DCU). Early results indicate that the system successfully forecasted five potential events, on average 12 minutes prior to alarm incidents, allowing operators to take timely corrective action. These predictive insights helped to minimise downtime and reduce emissions from flaring.
Â
According to Honeywell Process Solutions, the collaboration with TotalEnergies represents a milestone in bridging the gap between autonomous technologies and the human expertise essential to refinery operations. The AI-driven assistant draws on Honeywell’s long-standing domain experience in process automation and industrial digitalisation.
Â
Located in Southeast Texas near the Gulf Coast, TotalEnergies’ Port Arthur Platform refines crude oil into transportation fuels and produces petrochemicals used in plastics, rubber and pharmaceuticals. The pilot programme is a joint effort between Honeywell, TotalEnergies’ Port Arthur platform, and its technology headquarters, OneTech.
