Honeywell (Nasdaq: HON) has revealed that its Solstice ze refrigerant has played a pivotal role in achieving remarkable energy efficiency gains for Q-REF’s KIBO chiller, surpassing traditional ammonia-powered solutions by an impressive 46%. This collaboration underscores Honeywell’s commitment to align its portfolio with key megatrends, including the energy transition.

Driving Energy Efficiency in Cold Storage

As the demand for cold storage capacity continues to surge globally, particularly in Europe, the associated energy consumption becomes a critical concern. Power costs can comprise a significant portion, ranging from 50 to 70%, of expenditures for cold storage and logistics operations. For retailers and food producers, optimising cold storage efficiency is paramount in reducing Scope 3 emissions and achieving decarbonisation objectives.

Benoit Duparc, CEO of Q-REF, highlights the transformative impact of Honeywell Solstice technology: “Thanks to Honeywell Solstice, our KIBO chiller, featuring Danfoss Turbocor’s compressor technology, has achieved unprecedented energy efficiency levels in the cold storage industry. KIBO not only delivers nearly 20% savings in maintenance operations but also boasts a 30% reduction in size and weight compared to traditional ammonia chillers.”

Contributing to Europe’s Green Goals

The European Union’s Fit for 55 initiative, aligned with the European Green Deal strategy, places a strong emphasis on energy efficiency as a cornerstone for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. Honeywell Solstice technology empowers Q-REF’s customers to make significant strides towards Europe’s ambitious emissions targets while ensuring compliance with the latest F-Gas regulation revisions.

Julien Soulet, Vice President and General Manager of Honeywell Advanced Materials in EMEA, emphasises the company’s commitment to sustainability: “As the transition to low global warming potential refrigerants gains momentum, Honeywell remains at the forefront of innovation, developing responsible alternatives that minimise carbon footprints while enhancing energy efficiency, safety, and performance. Honeywell Solstice technology supports manufacturers like Q-REF in meeting Europe’s evolving regulatory requirements concerning energy consumption.”

Driving Innovation for a Sustainable Future

With a dedicated investment exceeding $1 billion in research, development, and capacity expansion for Solstice technology, Honeywell continues to lead the way in driving sustainable solutions. Since its inception in 2011, Solstice technology has been instrumental in mitigating the release of over 326 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents, equivalent to the annual emissions from nearly 70 million gasoline-powered passenger vehicles.
