ITA Airways has received official approval to begin its integration into Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance, following a decision by the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board (CEB). This milestone follows ITA Airways’ induction into the Lufthansa Group, setting the stage for its full membership in early 2026.
A Strategic Move for ITA Airways
Star Alliance CEO Theo Panagiotoulias welcomed the announcement, emphasizing the alliance’s confidence in ITA Airways:
“As a gateway for Italy, its addition strengthens our global network, offering seamless and connected journeys to more travellers worldwide.”
ITA Airways CEO and General Manager Joerg Eberhart echoed this sentiment, stating that joining Star Alliance will enhance the airline’s global reach and customer offerings. He described it as a “significant milestone” in the airline’s development.
Expanding Star Alliance’s European Presence
Once fully integrated, ITA Airways will contribute 360 daily flights to Star Alliance’s network, bolstering connectivity across Europe, particularly in its key hubs of Rome and Milan. Currently, 16 Star Alliance members operate from these cities.
Lufthansa Group, a long-standing Star Alliance member, is playing a key role in ITA Airways’ onboarding. Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, highlighted the seamless transition process and the benefits for passengers, stating:
“ITA Airways’ future membership will provide Star Alliance customers with new opportunities for personalised travel planning.”
Strengthening Global Connectivity
With ITA Airways joining as the 26th member airline, Star Alliance will expand its global footprint to over 18,000 daily flights connecting 192 countries. This move not only cements ITA Airways’ position in global aviation but also enhances Italy’s role as a key hub for international travel.
