KRATOS COMPLETES $50 MILLION HYPERSONIC PAYLOAD INTEGRATION FACILITY IN INDIANA AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has completed construction of its Indiana Payload Integration Facility at Crane, a 68,000-square-foot purpose-built site able to integrate, test and prepare up to six experimental hypersonic payloads simultaneously in support of programmes including the Multi-Service Advanced Capabilities Hypersonic Testbed.

SIX PAYLOADS IN PARALLEL, BUILT TO RAISE TEST CADENCE

 

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has announced that construction of its Indiana Payload Integration Facility for Hypersonic Systems at Crane, Indiana, has been completed ahead of schedule. The $50 million facility is purpose-built for the rapid, affordable preparation of experimental payloads, with the stated objective of increasing the tempo of flight testing for next-generation hypersonic systems and accelerating the development of advanced weapons systems.

 

The 68,000-square-foot facility is equipped for advanced manufacturing, integration and testing of experimental hypersonic payloads. Its engineering team will use workflows designed to integrate, test and prepare up to six experimental payloads simultaneously for hypersonic vehicles supporting programmes including the Multi-Service Advanced Capabilities Hypersonic Testbed, known as MACH-TB. The facility is expected to create over 100 high-technology jobs at an estimated average annual wage above $80,000, with significant hiring under way.

 

WHY TEST CADENCE IS THE CONSTRAINT

 

The emphasis on parallel processing and tempo addresses what has become the principal bottleneck in hypersonic development. Flight testing at Mach 5 and above cannot be adequately substituted by ground facilities or simulation, because the coupled aerothermal, structural and propulsion behaviour in that regime is difficult to reproduce and difficult to model with confidence. Programmes therefore depend on the rate at which test articles can be built, instrumented, integrated and flown — and where payload preparation is serial rather than parallel, that rate sets the pace of the entire development cycle regardless of how quickly the underlying technology matures.

 

Mike Johns, Vice President of Kratos SRE, said the investment brought online a national asset and critically needed infrastructure to rapidly scale the cadence of hypersonic testing in the United States, and that the facility would be a gathering place for the most advanced technologies and companies in hypersonics. Dave Carter, President of Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services, said the expansion near the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division formed part of a strategy to establish an advanced defence hub in southern Indiana, building purpose-built facilities that enhance United States defence and aerospace capabilities.

 

KRATOS’S POSITION IN THE HYPERSONICS SUPPLY CHAIN

 

Kratos states that it is the only company delivering both propulsion and flyer systems in the hypersonics domain. Its portfolio includes the Erinyes hypersonic flyer, described by the company as a low-cost system, alongside Dark Fury and the Zeus and Oriole solid rocket motors. The combination is commercially relevant because it allows the company to offer integrated test vehicles rather than components requiring integration by a third party — consistent with the affordability positioning Kratos applies across its business, and with the stated purpose of the new facility in raising the number of test flights achievable for a given budget.
