A seven-country consortium led by Leonardo will spend the coming months mapping how national, institutional and commercial satellite assets could be federated into a single European system.
LEONARDO SELECTED TO HELP SHAPE EUROPE’S FUTURE SOVEREIGN EARTH OBSERVATION CAPABILITY
The European Space Agency has awarded Leonardo a fully funded contract to define the architecture of the future EU Earth Observation Governmental Service (EOGS), intended to support Europe’s autonomous decision-making in security and defence through space data. The contract is one of two parallel architectural studies funded by the European Commission and signed with ESA under the Financial Framework Partnership Agreement, alongside preparatory activities known as European Resilience from Space for Earth Observation (ERS-EO). Led by Leonardo, the study draws on Telespazio, Thales Alenia Space, e-GEOS and a wider network of European partners spanning Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg, Portugal and Poland, including OHB, GAF, HiTec, Alioth, CEiiA, Argotec, Satlantis, KPLabs, AIKO and SITAEL. “This is an important step in paving the way towards a sovereign European Earth observation capability supporting security and resilience,” said Simonetta Cheli, ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes. “We are pleased that Leonardo is now poised to contribute to the blueprint to help shape Europe’s Earth observation capabilities for the next decade and beyond, bringing together national, institutional and commercial assets within a shared operational framework aimed to strengthen Europe’s resilience and strategic autonomy.”
MAPPING A FEDERATED SYSTEM FROM THE GROUND UP
Starting from the operational needs of security and defence users, the Leonardo-led study will assess current capabilities, carry out a gap analysis, and evaluate architectural options for performance, resilience, responsiveness and affordability across the full value chain of space systems, sensors, ground infrastructure, data processing and services, drawing on Leonardo’s own Earth observation constellation and the wider Space Alliance’s technology base. A central aim is federating existing and future European satellite assets so that national, institutional and commercial capabilities can operate within one integrated system rather than in isolation. “Europe’s strategic autonomy increasingly depends on its ability to access, understand and use critical data from space,” said Massimo Claudio Comparini, Managing Director of Leonardo’s Space Division. “Through the EOGS study, Leonardo will contribute its and Space Alliance technologies, infrastructures and expertise to help shape a sovereign Earth Observation capability supporting Europe’s security, resilience and technological independence.”
