LYTEN ACQUIRES EUROPE’S LARGEST BESS MANUFACTURING FACILITY FROM NORTHVOLT, LAUNCHES LITHIUM-SULFUR PRODUCTION IN POLAND

Lyten, a global leader in lithium-sulfur battery technology, has announced the acquisition of Northvolt’s Dwa ESS operations in Gdansk, Poland—Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) manufacturing and R&D facility. The strategic acquisition marks a major expansion of Lyten’s global footprint and positions the company at the forefront of advanced energy storage in Europe.

The 25,000-square-metre Gdansk facility, which came online in 2023, has the capacity to scale up to 6 GWh and expand to over 10 GWh. Lyten will immediately restart production to resume sales of BESS, including the world’s first systems powered by lithium-sulfur batteries. This follows Lyten’s earlier acquisition of Northvolt’s lithium-metal cell facility in Silicon Valley, reinforcing its rapid scaling of next-generation battery production.

“Northvolt’s BESS manufacturing operations are truly world class and are a seamless strategic fit for Lyten as we launch an exciting new chapter for our company,” said Dan Cook, Lyten CEO and Co-Founder. “We plan to immediately restart operations in Poland and deliver on existing and new customer orders.”

The lithium-sulfur batteries developed by Lyten offer several advantages over traditional lithium-ion technology: a wider operating temperature range, improved safety, ultra-lightweight form, and a supply chain free from critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. These batteries are built from abundant, low-cost materials sourced in the U.S. and Europe—reducing geopolitical risks and environmental impact.

The move has received strong support from the Port of Gdansk and Polish authorities. “The planned investment is a confirmation of the growing competitiveness of Poland and specifically Gdansk on the global economic map,” said Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, President of Gdansk.

Lyten Chairman and Co-Founder Lars Herlitz added, “The message we are hearing clearly from European customers is that they want energy storage systems manufactured in Europe using locally sourced supply chains free of geopolitical risk. Gdansk, Poland is the perfect location to meet this need.”

Northvolt Poland CEO Robert Chryc-Gawrychowski acknowledged Lyten’s alignment with the original mission: “Lyten is carrying that mission forward with BESS manufacturing and the introduction of lithium-sulfur batteries in Europe, which replaces minerals like nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite, with locally abundant battery materials.”

The acquisition comes at a critical time for the BESS sector—the fastest growing segment in the battery market—fueled by soaring demand from AI data centers, electricity grid resilience, and emerging market power needs. Lyten’s recent $650 million letter of intent from the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. underscores this momentum.

Founded in 2015, Lyten has raised over $425 million in equity, holds more than 520 patents granted or pending, and was named one of Time’s Top Green Technology Companies in both 2024 and 2025. With its U.S. headquarters in San Jose, CA and European base in Luxembourg, Lyten continues to build on its proprietary Lyten 3D Graphene materials platform to power a new era of decarbonising technologies.

The transaction with Northvolt is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025.
