NORTHROP GRUMMAN COMPLETES GROUNDBREAKING HYBRID SATCOM DEMONSTRATION

Northrop Grumman Corporation has successfully conducted its first over-the-air demonstration of a hybrid satellite communications (SATCOM) solution, showcasing the future of seamless connectivity in space. The demonstration integrated connections between Viasat and a commercial proliferated low Earth orbit (PLEO) communications provider, achieving uninterrupted communication while transitioning between different satellite constellations and orbits.

As the prime systems integrator, Northrop Grumman’s hybrid SATCOM system significantly enhances communication capabilities for military pilots and operators across space, air, and ground. This robust connectivity makes it increasingly difficult for adversarial threats to disrupt U.S. communications across multiple orbits, providers, and frequency bands.

The demonstration, which was part of the Defense Experimentation Using Commercial Space Internet (Global Lightning) program, proved the operational viability of a multi-orbit, multi-constellation network. This successful test supports the rapid deployment of resilient communications technologies essential for modern military missions.

Steven Conn, director of advanced communications and signals intelligence at Northrop Grumman, commented on the success of the demonstration: “Northrop Grumman is responding to the U.S. Air Force’s need for rapid deployment of resilient communications to develop and field the technologies required by our warfighters. This test is a critical step toward flight testing as part of the Global Lightning program.”

The hybrid SATCOM terminal used in the demonstration is designed to host nine modems with integrated network routing, security, and encryption features. Should a network failure occur, the terminal switches between modems to maintain uninterrupted communication. The demonstration showcased the system’s ability to switch between commercial low-Earth orbit PLEO communications at Ku frequencies and Viasat’s geosynchronous satellite at Ka frequencies.

This achievement underscores Northrop Grumman’s position as a leading global aerospace and defense technology company, continually pushing the boundaries of communication technology to ensure mission-critical connectivity for military forces and beyond.
