PORTUGAL EXPANDS KC-390 FLEET AND OPENS DOOR FOR WIDER NATO COOPERATION

Paris – June 16, 2025 — In a significant move unveiled at the 55th Paris Air Show, Embraer announced that Portugal has decided to acquire a sixth KC-390 Millennium aircraft, reinforcing its position as a key operator of the versatile military transport jet. The announcement signals a strategic expansion of the Portuguese Air Force’s (FAP) capabilities and introduces a new avenue for European and NATO allies to access the aircraft via Portugal.

The latest decision builds on the original 2019 contract between Portugal and Embraer for five KC-390s. With the inclusion of a sixth aircraft, the FAP will be equipped with an enhanced fleet of new-generation transport aircraft capable of fulfilling a wide range of operational and humanitarian missions.

In a further boost to regional defence collaboration, the Portuguese State and Embraer plan to amend the existing agreement to include ten new purchase options. These options are positioned for future acquisitions by other European nations and NATO members through government-to-government negotiations, with Portugal acting as a facilitating partner.

“With this decision, Portugal continues to invest in the capabilities of the Air Force, at a time when it becomes the reference operator of this aircraft,” said Nuno Melo, Minister of Defence of Portugal. “The inclusion of ten purchase options… will allow other European and NATO nations to acquire, through Portugal, interoperable and versatile platforms.”

Melo also highlighted the role of the KC-390 Training Centre in Portugal, reinforcing the country’s commitment to becoming a hub for operational excellence and joint training.

Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defence & Security, welcomed the move: “The acquisition of the sixth KC-390 by the FAP… demonstrates the recognition of the quality and operational results that this aircraft has achieved.” He noted that additional purchase options signal growing Western interest in the platform, which brings economic and operational synergies throughout its lifecycle.

Since its introduction to the Portuguese fleet in 2023, the KC-390 Millennium has proven its reliability with a 99% mission completion rate and low operating costs. Its mission versatility includes troop and cargo transport, aerial refuelling, SAR, medevac, humanitarian aid, firefighting, and maritime surveillance—making it a critical asset for Portugal and potentially, its allies.

With this announcement, Portugal positions itself not only as a user but also as a strategic enabler for future KC-390 operators within NATO and beyond.
