RTX has delivered a Blue Canyon Technologies-built minisatellite to support NASA’s Pandora mission, marking another milestone in small satellite-enabled space science. The Saturn-200 platform successfully launched this week and will play a central role in long-duration observations of exoplanet atmospheres.
Developed by Blue Canyon Technologies, a subsidiary of RTX, the Saturn-200 minisatellite will host the Pandora payload—designed to study planets beyond our solar system and the activity of their host stars.
Probing Exoplanet Atmospheres
Pandora’s scientific objective is to conduct detailed observations of at least 20 exoplanets by monitoring stellar transits, when a planet passes in front of its star and causes a measurable dimming of starlight. During these events, a planet’s atmosphere absorbs and scatters specific wavelengths of light. By analysing these signatures, scientists can determine atmospheric composition and evaluate conditions that may support life.
The mission will focus particularly on detecting atmospheres dominated by hydrogen or water, providing insight into planetary formation and habitability.
Precision Platform for Long Observations
According to Chris Winslett, General Manager of Blue Canyon Technologies, Pandora carries the largest telescope payload yet integrated onto a Blue Canyon spacecraft. The Saturn-class platform’s advanced guidance, navigation and control systems are designed to deliver the precision pointing and stability required for extended exoplanet observations.
Beyond the spacecraft bus itself, Blue Canyon also provided launch vehicle integration and post-launch bus commissioning services, supporting the mission from deployment through early operations.
NASA-Led Science Mission
Pandora is a programme of NASA Science Mission Directorate, led by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and managed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The mission reflects NASA’s growing use of compact, high-performance satellite platforms to deliver focused science objectives more efficiently.
With the successful launch of Pandora, Blue Canyon Technologies has now supported the deployment of 87 spacecraft, underscoring the maturity and scalability of its small satellite platforms for both scientific and operational missions.
