TEXTRON AND MERLIN UNVEIL AUTONOMOUS CESSNA SKYCOURIER UX CONCEPT FOR CONTESTED LOGISTICS

The concept pairs a certified, in-production freighter with Merlin’s autonomy software, aiming to fill a gap between small tactical delivery drones and full-size military airlifters.

TEXTRON AND MERLIN INTRODUCE CESSNA SKYCOURIER UX CONCEPT AIRCRAFT

 

Textron Aviation and Merlin, Inc. introduced a concept Cessna SkyCourier UX aircraft on 14 September at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference, pairing Textron’s FAA-certified Cessna SkyCourier twin-engine turboprop with Merlin’s aircraft-agnostic autonomy software. The companies describe the concept as a response to military interest in sustaining forces dispersed across contested environments where traditional supply routes may be constrained or unavailable, offering a medium-payload, fixed-wing option positioned between small tactical cargo drones, which the companies say generally lack sufficient payload capacity, and large military airlifters, which are not suited to every mission. “Military planners are increasingly focused on how to sustain forces across distributed and contested operational environments,” said Bob Gibbs, vice president, Defense and Special Mission Sales at Textron Aviation. “The Cessna SkyCourier UX concept reflects our commitment to examining practical solutions to real-world mission challenges by leveraging real, certified products with innovative adaptation.”

 

BUILT ON A CERTIFIED AIRFRAME, DESIGNED AROUND AUTONOMY

 

Because it starts from an FAA-certified aircraft already in production, Textron and Merlin say the concept benefits from an established manufacturing system, global support network and mature sustainment infrastructure rather than requiring a clean-sheet design and certification programme of its own. Based on current design objectives, the companies say the SkyCourier UX would carry approximately 6,000 pounds of payload, accommodate up to three LD3 cargo containers, and operate from unimproved runways, with potential applications including hub-to-spoke distribution, sustainment of expeditionary bases, delivery of repair parts and medical supplies, and support for remote-airfield operations. Design concepts under evaluation include a forward-loading cargo architecture that replaces cockpit volume with additional cargo space, accessed through a large nose opening, combined with aircraft kneeling and integrated loading systems intended to improve cargo accessibility from austere locations. “The future of contested logistics needs more capacity and access to places we wouldn’t risk a crew,” said Matt George, CEO and founder of Merlin. “Merlin Pilot has already flown hundreds of autonomous flights on Cessna Caravans, Beechcraft King Airs and other aircraft. This concept pairs it with a proven platform, the Cessna SkyCourier, to explore what an aircraft could look like when it’s designed around autonomy and cargo instead of a crew. Solving contested logistics today takes proven autonomy and a proven airframe.” Merlin’s own public disclosures show its autonomy work has progressed on a separate, larger platform in parallel: the company has reported completing preliminary and critical design reviews during 2026 under a C-130J autonomy programme for US Special Operations Command, a programme the companies’ materials describe as carrying more than 100 million dollars in contract ceiling value.

 

Note: A model of the Cessna SkyCourier UX concept was shown publicly for the first time at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference. As a concept aircraft, it has not flown and no certification or procurement timeline has been announced.
