Hamburg, Germany – May 20, 2025 — Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has marked a major milestone in its fleet expansion strategy with the delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR, powered by Pratt & Whitney’s advanced GTF™ engines. The ceremony took place at Airbus’ A320 Final Assembly Line in Hamburg and signifies Wizz Air’s role as the launch operator of this new aircraft-engine combination.
The A321XLR, an extended-range variant of the popular A321neo, is set to reshape long-haul narrowbody operations. With its Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the aircraft promises exceptional fuel efficiency and reduced operating costs—key factors for low-cost carriers seeking to expand into intercontinental routes.
“This delivery underscores the benefits the GTF engine offers with its world-class fuel efficiency and operating economics,” said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. “Wizz Air is the first of many operators that will leverage the performance of this aircraft-engine pairing to unlock new market potential.”
Wizz Air has placed orders for 47 GTF-powered A321XLRs. The airline already operates 110 A321neo aircraft with GTF engines and 67 A320ceo aircraft powered by IAE V2500® engines, highlighting a longstanding and expanding partnership with Pratt & Whitney.
Wizz Air’s Chief Corporate Officer, Owain Jones, described the event as a defining moment for the airline and its passengers. “This aircraft is one of the great results of our two-decade-long cooperation with Airbus. It brings a revolution to air travel, enabling us to offer non-stop intercontinental routes at unbeatable prices while maintaining our commitment to efficiency and sustainability.”
The new aircraft will feature state-of-the-art cabin elements, deliver a quieter ride, and serve as one of the most environmentally efficient jets in its class. Wizz Air’s strategic investment aligns with the broader industry push toward sustainable and cost-effective long-haul solutions.
Globally, 13 airlines have chosen GTF engines for more than 200 A321XLR aircraft. More than 2,200 GTF-powered aircraft have already been delivered to over 80 operators worldwide. The GTF Advantage, the next evolution of the engine, recently received FAA type certification and is on track for delivery later this year—positioned as an ideal match for the higher thrust requirements of the A321XLR
