IN MEMORIAM:– NICK FADUGBA

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Nick Fadugba, a towering figure in African aviation and a passionate advocate for the industry’s growth and development across the continent. Nick’s life was one of remarkable dedication and impact, with his contributions leaving an indelible mark on the aviation sector in Africa and beyond.

Nick Fadugba established African Aviation Services (AAS) in 1990 with a visionary goal: to use aviation as a catalyst for Africa’s economic and social transformation. His efforts were instrumental in promoting aviation development throughout the continent. Since 1988, Nick provided a wide range of consultancy and advisory services to both international and African aviation organizations and governments. His work helped foster vital business relationships between Africa and the international aviation community, particularly in areas such as Aviation Finance, Aircraft Leasing, Maintenance, Air Safety, and Aviation Training.

In May 2018, Nick was elected Chairman of the African Business Aviation Association (AfBAA), further solidifying his leadership role in the industry. His extensive contributions also included serving as Secretary General of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), a launch member of AfBAA, and Vice Chairman of its Safety & Training Committee. He was a Chief Advisor to the Association of African Aviation Training Organisations (AATO), a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAes) in the UK, and a member of numerous prestigious aviation organizations worldwide.

Nick’s pioneering spirit was evident in his efforts to initiate high-level international aviation conferences tailored specifically for Africa. In 1990, he also launched AFRICAN AVIATION, Africa’s Aviation Industry Journal, to promote the continent’s aviation sector on a global stage. His work did not go unnoticed, as he received numerous awards and accolades, including an “Outstanding Contribution to the African Aviation Industry” award from AFRAA in 2003 and a plaque from the USA National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in 2000 for his service to aviation safety.

His academic achievements were as impressive as his professional ones, with a BSc (Honours) in Mass Communication, a Post Graduate Diploma in Air Transport Management, and an MSc (Distinction) in Air Transport Planning and Management.

Nick Fadugba’s passing is a tremendous loss to the aviation community, particularly in Africa. He was not just a leader but a visionary whose enthusiasm and dedication will be sorely missed.

“Opening my email this morning and reading about Nick Fadugba, I was devastated. My life is crumbling around the edges as I face the news of more and more of aviation’s great innovators and unique thinkers, catalysts for Africa’s economic and social transformation, who are no longer with us. Nick has been part of the aviation world for so long. His enthusiasm and dedication to the aviation world were phenomenal. He was a very vibrant figure, always fostering aviation principles. On behalf of World Airnews, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and to all his aviation friends.” Joan Chalmers, Editor of World Airnews,

Nick’s legacy will undoubtedly live on in the many lives he touched and the lasting impact he made on African aviation.
