The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the theme for its 2024 World Safety and Operations Conference (WSOC), which will focus on “Embracing Innovation and Technology for Safe and Efficient Operations.” The conference is set to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, from October 1 to 3, with Royal Air Maroc serving as the host airline.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh highlighted the growing complexity of the global aviation operating environment. “Airlines face common challenges with an operating environment that is growing more complex,” Walsh stated. “At the same time, technological advances, including AI, are offering ever greater potential in support of safe and efficient operations.”
As the aviation industry grapples with regional conflicts, cybersecurity threats, and extreme weather events, the focus on safety remains paramount. Royal Air Maroc board chairperson and CEO, Abdelhamid Addou, stressed the importance of the event: “For Royal Air Maroc, hosting WSOC is an opportunity to contribute to strengthening the industry’s performance while redoubling our own efforts. This is in particularly sharp focus as we embark on a major expansion to become a 200-aircraft airline by 2037.”
Key Focus Areas at WSOC 2024
The conference will feature four session tracks covering a wide range of topics relevant to airline safety and operations: Safety, Cabin Operations, Flight Operations, and Crisis Management. Discussions will address vital areas such as the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), runway safety, AI-driven data analysis, cabin safety, and digital aircraft maintenance.
Workshops will also play a significant role in the event. These will include the **Air Traffic Management (ATM) Workshop**, aimed at improving ATM operational efficiency to help the aviation industry reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and the **Turbulence Aware Workshop**, which focuses on real-time turbulence data for improving fuel efficiency.
Another key workshop, **”How Just Should Your ‘Just Culture’ Be?”**, will explore the value of promoting a Just Culture within airlines, emphasizing workforce motivation and risk management. Additionally, the **”Power of Connecting the Dots Across Airline Safety and Operations”** workshop will stress the importance of integrating safety with operational efficiency.
“WSOC 2024 is the forum for industry leaders and experts to share knowledge and experience to make the industry even more resilient and robust in the face of emerging challenges,” Walsh concluded.
