Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE:JOBY), the company behind the development of electric air taxis for commercial passenger service, has made significant strides toward launching its air taxi operations. The company recently received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its Part 141 Flight Academy and its acceptance into the FAA’s Part 5 Voluntary Safety Management System (SMS) for air operations. These approvals are crucial milestones for Joby as it prepares for the commercial launch of its air taxi services.
The FAA Part 141 certificate will allow Joby Aviation Academy to provide streamlined pilot training, creating a pipeline of qualified aviators for future air taxi operations. This academy will offer a comprehensive range of courses, including private pilot, instrument rating, commercial pilot, and certified flight instructor programs, all designed to equip students for careers at Joby or other air operators. Bonny Simi, President of Operations at Joby, commented on the achievement: “We’re pleased to be ticking two more items off our operations checklist as we continue to lead the industry towards commercialisation of electric air taxis. As a former airline pilot, I’m particularly looking forward to seeing our Flight Academy grow in both courses and students in the coming years.”
Additionally, Joby has advanced its safety culture with FAA acceptance of its Safety Management System (SMS) under Part 5, ahead of the regulatory deadline. The SMS is integral to the safety framework for air taxi operators and involves the development of safety policies and a culture of safety reporting. Joby’s proactive approach demonstrates its commitment to safety as it works to set up its Joby Elevate air taxi service. Simi further emphasised, “We are also building a strong safety foundation for our planned operations with the FAA acceptance of our Safety Management System governing air operations.”
The approvals for both the Part 141 Flight Academy and the Part 5 SMS are key requirements for Joby’s upcoming air taxi service. These developments are part of Joby’s ongoing preparations for its commercial air taxi operations, as outlined during a presentation titled “Pre-Flight Checklist: An Introduction to Joby Air Taxi Operations” in June 2024. The company is also working on an Enterprise SMS that encompasses all aspects of its operations, including aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, and flight training.
Joby’s electric air taxi is designed for high-speed urban mobility, with a capacity for a pilot and four passengers, capable of speeds up to 200 mph. Offering a quieter, zero-emissions alternative to traditional helicopters, Joby is positioning itself at the forefront of the urban air mobility market, which is expected to revolutionise transport in cities around the world.
