Additional Boeing 777 freighter flights support peak-season demand, reinforcing Kenya’s position as a global floriculture hub.
Nairobi, 13 February 2025 – Qatar Airways Cargo, the world’s leading air freight carrier, has transported 1,600 tonnes of fresh-cut red roses from Kenya in time for Valentine’s Day, ensuring timely delivery to global markets. The shipment, equivalent to 25 million roses, was carried on the airline’s Nairobi-Doha and Liège routes.
To meet the surge in seasonal demand, Qatar Airways Cargo deployed an additional nine Boeing 777 charter freighters, supplementing its regular passenger-and-cargo flights. On an annual basis, the carrier lifts over 25,000 tonnes of freight from Kenya, with 75% consisting of fresh flowers. The remaining cargo includes meat, fruits, and vegetables.
A Vital Boost for Kenya’s Floriculture Industry
“Kenya’s floriculture sector is a success story that must be celebrated and supported,” said Mark Drusch, Chief Officer Cargo at Qatar Airways Cargo. “Kenya is renowned for its high-quality roses, thanks to its unique growing environment. As the world’s leading air cargo carrier, we are proud to play a role in delivering these flowers globally while supporting the Kenyan economy.”
Kenya exports 40% of its flowers to Europe, with other key markets including the Middle East, Japan, and Australia. Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest periods for the industry, offering a significant economic boost for farm workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs involved in floriculture.
Strengthening Africa’s Agribusiness and Logistics Network
Kenya’s flower industry contributes 1.25% to the country’s GDP and employs over 500,000 people, according to the International Institute for Sustainable Development. In response to the industry’s growing global demand, Qatar Airways Cargo expanded capacity with additional charter flights, complementing its 14 scheduled passenger-and-cargo flights and three weekly Boeing 777 freighters between Nairobi and Doha.
“Our increased capacity reaffirms Qatar Airways Cargo’s commitment to supporting Africa’s socio-economic development by connecting Kenya’s floriculture sector to key global markets,” Drusch added.
